Our Story
With more than two decades in the Italian and Mexican food scene, chef Joaquin Lopez is now sharing his culinary expertise with Sun Prairie as owner of a longtime landmark Sun Prairie diner, Country Cafe. Joaquin took over Country Cafe in 2019 and has been pleasing discerning customers with traditional American and top shelf Italian cuisine since.
“My wife Fabiola and I fell in love with the people and the food when we first stopped in with our realtor. We’ve been working hard since purchasing the business to keep what has always been enjoyed by the cafes’ patrons while expanding our offerings, too. It’s really all about a passion for food and our love of community and family,” Joaquin says. “We are a family business and proud of that.”
Several family members can be seen working in the cafe and they are on a first name basis with many of the cafe’s loyal customers.

Restaurant Review: Country Cafe
Sunday March 20, 2022
Country Cafe in Sun Prairie is a popular breakfast and lunch spot, and chef/owner Joaquin Lopez, three months after he took over in 2019, stopped offering breakfast and lunch in the evening, and expanded the restaurant’s dinner menu to include a huge selection of pasta dishes, steaks, chicken and seafood.
Lopez knows a thing or two about Italian food since he used to be the head chef and co-owner of the dependable Nonna’s Ristorante Italiano at Whitney Way and Odana Road.
Country Cafe’s dinners fly under the radar so it’s a good choice on a Friday night when other restaurants are crowded and you don’t feel like waiting for a table. When I visited with two friends there were only a few other tables of dinners in the roomy restaurant.
